New Month. New Start. Get SMART.

November 1, 2016

Happy November First!

It’s hard to believe there are only two months left in 2016! Where did the time go? It sure goes fast doesn’t it?

Yesterday I spoke about the beginning of the Holiday season and a few tricks for how to stay on track throughout the next two months, if you haven’t had the chance to read it yet, click here to do so.

Today I thought I would touch base on goal setting. Why not right? It is a new month and a great time to check in, assess, and get focused on becoming a better you over the next 30 days.

One of my favorite goal setting tactics is implementing SMART Goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for the following:

Therefore when we set a goal, ideally it well encompasses all of these aspects. By doing so it allows us to be clear, direct, and specific in our actions.  I have had a number of friends mention to me their intentions for embracing a lifestyle change over the next few weeks to months – and I absolutely love hearing that! Usually my follow up question,  “ Ok, so what is your plan?” In reality I am listening for the foundation of their SMART goals.

If someone says I want to eat better or workout more – that is great! However, it’s not really quantifiable or measureable. So lets say we get to the end of week one and reflect back and say did we eat better? Did we workout more? We can sort of rationalize our way into thinking whatever we want to. It’s kind of how our brains work.

To spin this, lets reframe these two statements:

  • I will eat lean protein and vegetables for dinner five nights a week for the next two weeks

  • I will go to the gym and lift weights for 30 minutes four times a week for the next two weeks.

See the difference? These two statements are specific. You can measure them. They aren’t too outlandish, and attainable. The action is repeatable and they are time-bound: two weeks.

So what will be your goals for November?  Be SMART about them ;) I would love to hear about them! Send me an email at kmvfitness@gmail.com or leave me a message on Facebook.

Have a wonderful start to your November!
